Trending Pre-Wedding Treatments for Grooms

The number of men, and especially grooms, getting into medical aesthetic treatments is on the rise. According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, procedures for men were up 63 percent between 2010 and 2015. Long gone are the days when a groom’s pre-wedding routine simply involved a haircut. Modern grooms are looking for pre-wedding treatments to help boost self-esteem, correct aging or physical flaws, and feel like their best on the big day. As a provider, it’s important to help your grooms navigate the months leading up to their wedding. We are sharing ideal strategies and actionable tips providers can use to help prepare the perfect pre-wedding treatment timeline for grooms.

In this article, we’ll cover the ideal treatment timelines for the following procedures:

  • Hair loss treatment with PRF
  • Kybella®
  • Neurotoxins
  • Dermal fillers
  • Botox® for underarm sweating
  • Microneedling or Juvėderm® for under-eye hollows

Four months before the wedding

Consultation

When it comes to aesthetic treatments, there is a common misconception that “women need more work and take longer.” The same advice for our brides-to-be also applies to our grooms: the earlier one can start treatments, the better. In order to achieve amazing aesthetic outcomes by the time of their wedding day, grooms may need multiple sessions or treatment types to achieve optimal results. Consultations are a chance to not only understand the issues and needs of the client but also determine what treatments best apply to them.

Three months before the wedding

Hair loss treatment with PRF

Many men suffer hair loss issues due to aging and other factors. Although there are some basic similarities between platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), there are crucial differences that make PRF superior for hair restoration. While the hair follicles treated with PRF will be immediately reinvigorated, hair growth is a slower process, and it can take several weeks to see results. That is why we recommend this treatment at the earliest possible stages of wedding preparation. As explained by Patrick Blake, MD: “There’s PRF for hair, which you do need more time for. You're looking for at least three months in advance to be able to fit in multiple sessions.”

Kybella® for chin

Many men are bothered by the very common issue of the “double chin.” This area can be especially problematic as it detracts from facial features such as a strong jaw. After years of weight changes and aging, clients may want to get rid of this extra fat so they can have the perfect angles during the many pictures taken at weddings. Kybella®, also known as the deoxycholic acid injection, is the first and only FDA-approved nonsurgical treatment that contours and improves the appearance of a double chin. Although it does not require anesthesia and has minimal downtime, we still recommend starting this treatment early. Patients typically experience visible contouring of their chin profile in two to four treatment sessions, which need to be spaced at least one month apart. Moreover, men tend to have more neck fat spread out over a large area and may need their providers to give it more attention throughout the treatments.

In addition to removing the appearance of a double chin, grooms may want to enhance their jawlines to match the likes of Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp. A Vogue article explains this as a rise in men looking for a chiseled and stronger-looking jawline. By also injecting dermal fillers into the angle of the jaw, grooms can achieve this perfect masculine look since the jawline will project laterally to create strongly structured lines. The lateral borders of the chin can also be injected to square off the jawline.

Two months before the wedding

Neurotoxins for skin

In younger stages of life, crow’s feet, glabellar lines, and frown lines appear as we express emotions. As we smile or frown, they are not much of an issue since they complement our feelings. However, as one gets older, changes to the underlying structure of the skin result in folds and wrinkles that are more permanent and may give an erroneous impression of our emotions. This is certainly a problem grooms do not want to have on their wedding day. Grooms are turning to neurotoxin injections to help them look their best on the happiest day of their lives. These injections are the perfect solution to help correct aging skin; they’re FDA-approved to temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines. The full family of neurotoxins includes Botox®, Jeuveau®, Dysport®, and Xeomin®.

Dermal fillers

Unlike women, men do not typically invest in important skincare products like sunscreen. With that said, men tend to lose facial volume commonly from sun exposure or habits such as smoking. The quickest way to fix this before the wedding is with hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvėderm®, Restylane®, Radiesse®, Voluma®, Volbella®.

Sculptra®, also known as the injectable poly-L-lactic acid, is another popular filler. It is the first and only FDA-approved PLLA facial injectable treatment that helps stimulate the skin’s own collagen production to smooth facial wrinkles. It includes higher dilution, the addition of immediate use reconstitution, new injection techniques, and the optional addition of lidocaine. These changes provide aesthetic injectors with even more options to administer Sculptra® safely and effectively. Sculptra® delivers gradual, natural-looking results over an average of three treatments spaced at least three weeks apart so we recommend it during the mid-way stage of the treatment plan.

Grooms may also have issues with nasolabial folds. These folds are indentation lines that extend from the edge of the nose to the mouth's outer corners and become more prominent when people smile and deepen with age. Providers may use Radiesse®, an FDA-approved dermal filler used to even out harsh nasolabial folds. The best part is that Radiesse® is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite, a naturally occurring substance in the human body. This means that your client does not need to undergo a prior allergy test. Since skin becomes plumper in the first three months following the treatment, it is a good procedure to start early.

Additionally, this product may be simultaneously used for grooms looking to correct hand lines and wrinkles. Wedding photos do not just capture the face, and you might want to use the product to treat parts like hands that may be overlooked. Radiesse® becomes an excellent solution for hand rejuvenation because it instantly restores lost volume in the back of the hands.

One month before the wedding

In this last month prior to the wedding, the treatment plan should focus on procedures that have the most minimal downtime but produce the most dramatic results for the big day.

Botox® for underarm sweating

According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, underarm Botox®  injections can reduce underarm sweating by 82–87%. Not only is this an effective procedure, but it usually only takes between two and four days to notice results and two weeks for the injections to take full effect. Results of an underarm Botox® treatment can last four to 12 months, which allows the groom to benefit even after the wedding — including the honeymoon. Therefore, we recommend administering this procedure in the last stage of the planning process.

Microneedling or Juvėderm® for under-eye hollows

Grooms know all too well the sleepless nights and exhausting days of last-minute wedding planning. Consequently, hollow under-eyes may be a concern. This is another treatment that is excellent to administer in the final month leading up to the wedding. Patrick Blake, MD explains: “Grooms can do microneedling or PRF to treat this area. With PRF, you're going to have a really big impact pretty quickly in those first few weeks. So that's something you could do like three weeks prior and really look, rested and transformed.

Conclusion

All brides and grooms hope to look their absolute best on their wedding day. While there might be a stigma on whether men should put in as much effort, it is the role of aesthetic medical professionals to break down that stigma and encourage their patients to feel their best. The procedures mentioned above are non-invasive or minimally invasive in nature and are perfect for busy grooms. While the needs of every patient may be different, it is important to develop a treatment plan beforehand in order to fairly address concerns and help the groom look his best when the big day arrives.
